Q. What is the true purpose of marriage?
A. There are three parts to this question to consider: What is true? What is the true purpose? and, How does that relate to marriage? For anything to be true, it must be founded on the truth of being, the truth that always guides us to live in the freedom of the Self and to assist others to know and enjoy the freedom of their own being. Such freedom is incomplete if it is lived selfishly and does not contribute to the freedom of others. What is that freedom? The freedom to be who they are in their present state of unfoldment; the freedom to choose whatever they want to experience or explore and do; and the freedom to manifest their innate nature, qualities, and purpose in life.
One such purpose relates to marriage. When two people, drawn by mutual affinity, idealism, spiritual recognition, and purpose to grow, choose to walk together on the path of life, they are in fact married or wedded to an ideal. This could be considered a spiritual marriage. When they desire to share the journey of life, it naturally follows that they want to celebrate their marriage in every sense of the word—both intimately and legally. Marriage is one of the most powerful means for individuals to renounce selfishness and self-isolation, to overcome their weaknesses, to nurture their growth in love, and to learn always to see the best in each other.
Furthermore, marriage allows responsible partners to be channels for other souls who seek physical embodiment to be drawn into their life, consistent with the predominating state of consciousness, heart quality, and spiritual idealism of the parents. It is natural that in marriage, loving and mature parents want to provide an environment that promotes harmony, mutual cooperation, and supportiveness to each one’s self-unfoldment. Marriage provides an anchor and the feeling of security to those who are committed to each other’s well-being and freedom to grow and manifest their innate divinity on earth.
